Compassion

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

Mk.8:1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:

3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.

*Although Jesus knew, the scriptures do not give us a motive for the multitude remaining with Jesus. Some may have only followed him hoping to receive food or healing...others may have genuinely believed his teachings. Still, he had the same compassion on all of them. Just as he knew their hearts & intent, he knows ours. Before we speak, he knows what we will say. (Ps. 139:2)

►Jesus came to a city called Nain & there saw a widow that was taking her only son to his burial...

Luke 7:13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

*She didn’t ask him for anything, she didn’t even approach him or speak to him. The verse doesn’t say she saw him, or that she knew he was nearby, or that she knew who he was. The verse simply says the Lord ‘saw her.’ Jesus didn’t raise her son from the dead so that others would see & glorify him. He raised him up for one reason; he felt compassion for the woman!

► Jesus preached in the synagogues throughout all Galilee, casting out devils...

Mark 1:40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

*Leprosy was a serious disease, & those afflicted with the disease were isolated & kept away from the population. Even though lepers were considered unclean, Jesus didn’t hesitate to heal him because he is a compassionate God!

Ps 145:8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
