For One Morsel

Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: > 1 Peter 1:16 …Be ye holy; for I am holy.

15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

profane = sinful, showing no regard or respect for God

for one morsel = for one moment of pleasure = feeling of satisfaction or enjoyment = the fulfillment of a need, appetite or desire

●Gen 25:29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: >

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: faint = without strength – loss of courage, or hope

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright. > James 2:5 ….Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

*Our ‘birthright’ is eternal life if we are born again, but if we lose faith and fall into sin we can lose this birthright. If we have the Holy Ghost we have the power to live right; we are no longer under the bondage of sin, although we might be tempted – it’s our choice – we choose to do right or we choose to do wrong.

We keep ourselves in righteousness >

1 Cor 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: (control)

2 Cor 7:1 ….let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Col 3:5 Mortify (discipline) therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

●Dan 3:14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. > we don’t have to take time to think about it!

17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

*If they had fallen into temptation they would have suffered at the enemy’s hand – If they turned to God in that suffering – he may have rescued them – but they still would suffer loss.

*Everyone is tempted >

Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

*Temptation first comes to your mind – it is not sin until you act on that temptation. Remember – it’s your choice – Satan doesn’t have the power to make you sin! >

Ro. 6 = This chapter teaches how to be forgiven and freed from sin:

1. buried with Christ = baptism (Acts 2:38) our old nature is crucified

2. we are risen with him, our sins are forgiven so that we can walk in newness of life

3. sin cannot rule us anymore as long as we yield ourselves to righteousness

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Jn. 2:1 ...if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, jesus Christ, the righteous.

*How many times can you come before the judge till he says, “I had better not see you in my court room again!”? It’s not hard to live right when you choose spirit over flesh.
