Keep Hope Alive

 2 Sam. 2:15 - 23

King David’s child is very sick, so David does what he always does...he seeks God for healing for the child. He fasts; he lays before God all night on the ground. The elders try to persuade him to rise up & eat - he refuses.

Seven days later, the child dies. The servants are talking amongst themselves, afraid of how David will react to the news. David realizes that the child must be dead. He asks his servants “Is the child dead?” They answer, “he is dead.”

David doesn’t cry out for God to raise his child from the dead, instead he accepts the will of God - it is final - David dries his eyes, ceases his pleading & he worships.

His servants didn’t understand & they questioned David, “When the child was alive, you fasted & prayed yet now that he is dead you rise & eat?”

David’s answer was simple, when the child was alive, he fasted & wept before God for he had hope that the Lord would be merciful unto him & heal the child. Now that the child is dead, why should he continue pleading before the Lord? He accepts God’s will with humility & grace.

*In every situation, we must hold fast to our faith, trusting God. He always hears, although he may not answer the way we expect Him to, the way we want Him to. Sometimes the things that happen in our lives are because of our own choices, & sometimes it is just time & chance (Ecc.9:11). Like David, keep hoping, praying & expecting until there is no reason to hope.

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD,

and whose hope the LORD is. (Jer 17:7)
