Moses Smites the Rock

Num 20:1 Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron (no refreshing)

3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink. (no harvest, no strength, no blessings) *They have forgotten their deliverance from the cruel treatment of the taskmasters in Egypt. They are quick to look for blame instead of looking to the one that saved them to provide for them.

6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

7 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

*People can only be gathered together by the word...blessings come from the rock of our salvation . The rock is Christ.

[1 Cor 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.]

Nu. 20:9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock

twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

*They weren't faithful to honor God as Holy before the congregation. They disobeyed his command & took glory unto themselves as though by their own power they gave the people water from the rock. God is the Rock! (1 Cor.10:4)

Num 27:12 The Lord shows Moses the promised land & tells him that after he sees it he will die...

14 For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes:

*Are we declaring the holiness & glory of the Lord? Or have we decided that God's work is done?

1 Peter 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles (revelation) of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

1. People are searching for something ...they are not satisfied... they listen to false prophecies & teachings, anything that gives them hope for the moment

2. They go thru the motions, attending church, thinking this is just the way it is...while they become lukewarm.

1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

*Our walk with Christ should show forth His love & power. We are examples to the lost!

*We have purpose!

1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. {Jn. 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

*Is the Word sanctified in us?

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

*Do we show the world a life of victorious living? He tells us we are the light of the world. Jesus can only be seen through His Word & through His church! We must let His light shine through us. >

Matt 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
