Our Purpose

What is our purpose?

Mic 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? *This is required, but is this our only purpose? No >

Matt 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

*Light is a source of illumination. Light is what makes ‘sight’ possible. The ‘light’ that we have in Christ is ‘truth’. [John 9:5….. I am the light of the world.] *We are to show forth – Christ because we are in his light. In everything we do – our ‘righteousness’ must show forth in the environment we are in, & that is – the world. The world is in darkness – we must be ‘light.’ * The aim of good works > that Christ be glorified

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

*When Jesus was on earth in the flesh – people followed him – now he is ‘in’ us & we must walk so that people will ‘follow’ us > to Christ (the truth)

1 Pet. 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: *We have been called out of ‘sin’ into righteousness that comes with the ‘truth’ of the gospel.

*Jesus to Paul ►

Acts 26:16... I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness

18 To open their eyes, (Gentiles) and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. *To shine forth the ‘light’ of the gospel unto them, so that they may repent & receive the truth (light) & thereby obtain eternal life.

Phil 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

16 Holding forth the word of life……..

Jn. 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. *Fruit = results from your life

Matt 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. > Lk. 5:10 …Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Jn. 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be… *Christ says ‘follow me’ > we follow him – we must live so that sinners can ‘follow’ us >

1 Pet. 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

*Steward = a person responsible for something > we are to ‘minister’ to one another & to the lost as responsible gift holders keeping the favor of God.*

Titus 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;…..

*Our Purpose ►

To shine forth the ‘light’ of the gospel that is the ‘love of Christ’

To show forth his praises in our everyday walk with him

To be witnesses of the truth of the gospel …'holding forth the word of life’…..

To bear fruit that others can partake of

To be ‘fishers of men’ drawing sinners to Christ

Ministering to others as good stewards

Showing ourselves as a ‘pattern’ of good works (pattern = a representation of Christ)

*How do we show ourselves as patterns? ►

1 Pet. 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

1 Pet. 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, (the act of giving up something / to offer something) holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable (just / not extreme) service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

*To conform is to become similar, in form or character - To be transformed is to be different from *

II Cor. 7:1 ...let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

*Our holiness is not complete until we are free from all acts of unrighteousness, and we cannot simply 'pray' sinful acts away; we must make changes in our lives. Vices, bad habits, immoral behavior, etc. are all things that we have to crucify in our lives. >

Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God

Col 3:5 Mortify (control, discipline) therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Gal. 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Ja. 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

Ja. 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. > Rom. 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

Lu. 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Eph. 4:29 Let no corrupt (dishonest) communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying…….

1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

1 Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

2 Cor. 10:17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.

Ga. 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Rom. 14:16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:

Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
