Praying The Right Way

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

Luke 11:1 ...Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

Mt. 6:9-13

9. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

After this manner = He didn't mean for us to repeat his words, but to pray in this way /with this approach

Our Father = (He cares for us as a loving parent cares for a child / pray respectfully as he is our creator) He is not to be approached as our ‘buddy’ or our equal….nothing less than our Holy Father. (That is not to say that throughout the day, we can’t talk to him as a friend or counsellor, but when we come before him in prayer, we are to present ourselves humbly & if we have sinned, we should come with a repentant heart) Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

►in heaven = never forget that he dwells in the supreme dwelling place of glory... heaven is his throne (he is not on our level…He is in a powerful place of his magnificence.

Hallowed be thy name = Holy, set apart like no other (none other is holy, but the name of the Father = Jesus) We should give thanks, praise & glory to his name before making our petitions.

Isa 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another…

Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

10. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Thy kingdom come = Let us receive your kingdom / (salvation > Mt.25:34 Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: *We believe in the in the promise of his kingdom with an understanding that righteousness must accompany our prayers >

1 Cor 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?

►Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven = Your power & desire be done here on earth also, even in us

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

*Thine is the kingdom, power & glory - You alone reign in the power & glorious love that can grant our request!

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

►Give us - our daily bread = We must recognize that God alone supplies our needs, & look to him to supply 2 Cor. 3:5 = ... our sufficiency is of God)

Luke 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread. >

John 14:27 …Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Matt 6:34 ….don't be worried about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have its own troubles. Live one day at a time. Matt 6: 31…. take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, how shall we be clothed?

32 …..for your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.

12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

forgive us as we forgive = *When we pray, we must forgive them that trespass against us in order to be worthy of forgiveness ourselves - prayers are not answered if we don’t forgive in others.

Luke 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.

Mark 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

►lead us not into temptation = Keep us from being lead into temptation

(God does not tempt - Ja.1:13-14) ...instead - lead us in a righteous path

deliver us from evil = Save us from evil (wickedness, harm, iniquity & the devices of Satan)

►For thine is the kingdom = The 'kingdom' is his alone (he established his kingdom for us to dwell in it with him)

and the power = All power, rule & authority is his

(Rom 13:1 ... For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.)

►and the glory, forever = No one else has the honor, magnificence & splendor that he has for all eternity –without end

►Thine is the kingdom, power & glory - You alone reign in the power & glorious love that can grant our request!
