The Mercy Seat

Ex 25:17-21

17 And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.

18 And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat

19 And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof

20 And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be

21 And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee.

  *The Lord dwells between the cherubims

Num 7:89  And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him

1 Sam 4:4...the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims..

2 Sam 6:2 ...the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims

2 Kings 19:15...O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims..

Ps 80:1...thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.

Ps 99:1  The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims...

Isa 37:16 ...God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims...

  *The mercy seat is a place of propitiation (atonement) The Greek word for ‘mercy seat’ being - kaphar, meaning to pardon/forgive. This is where the law & commandments of God are...this is where His Word brings atonement for our sins.

Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood

1 John 2:2...he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

 *No longer is the blood of bulls & goats required, but a one-time sacrifice freely given by Jesus, the Messiah.

Heb 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

  *The Angels at the tomb:

John 20:11  But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

   *Just as the cherubim’s overshadowed the mercy seat, one at each end, angels stood at attendance over our Lord. In Gen. 3:24, Cherubim’s were placed at the east of the Garden of Eden to guard the tree of life, so we can assume they were also guardians over the body of Jesus.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing...

   *We now can enter into the holiest of holy’s to the mercy seat where Jesus is. He alone is our high priest that offers a blood sacrifice for our sins when we obey His doctrine. A new & living way >

Heb 10:19  Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

  *Drawing near with a repentant heart & declaration of faith in His Word, our hearts made clean, our conscience purged from sin, totally washed with clean water. He sanctifies & cleanses us, “...with the washing of water by the word” Eph 5:26

  *Repentance & Baptism in His name washes us clean by the Word...the water signifying His blood. It is His blood that was shed for our sins & it is His blood that gives remission. It is His blood that is sprinkled on the Mercy Seat for our sins. It is in His name that we have salvation. >

Acts 2:38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
